RON came by to check on Gar and Rion again as soon as they stopped for dinner. “How are they?” he asked Aradon.

“Worse than before,” the healer said, appearing visibly shaken.

Rarnak was laying a wet cloth over Rion’s forehead, and Ara was taking one from Gar’s face. Gar appeared to be unconscious too, now, and Ara looked frightened.

Aradon said, “I’m trying something else. I’m hoping it might make the fever break.”

At that moment, a boy of perhaps ten ran up to Aradon. “Aradon, please, come quick! Papa can’t breathe!”

Aradon leapt up and followed the boy. A short while later he was back again, looking grim. “Lanis is dead,” he said to Vargas.

“The fever?” Ron asked, his voice haunted.

“No. He was one of the two who were badly injured but not killed outright, the ones we feared might not make it. A wolven tore his arm off and his chest took great injury as well.”

Vargas sighed. “I knew we would lose people this journey, but I’d hoped there would not be so many at once or so soon. But we were just as doomed if we’d stayed in Athanark. No, we’d have been worse off. That City won’t last much longer. At least we’ve a chance on the road. I was a fool for not leaving earlier. I’d let myself get soft. I let my instincts dull. Years ago I’d never have let it get so far.”

They buried Lanis and settled in for a watchful night.
